An heartfelt moment between Tim Walz and his teenage son, Gus, has triggered a wave of praise and approval, but it has at the same time provoked ugly incidents of bullying on the internet.
Gus Walz,
who suffers from a nonverbal learning disability, along with anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), watched excitedly from the front row of Chicagoâs United Center and cried openly on Wednesday night as his father, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, gave his speech of acceptance at the Democratic National Convention.
The Nonverbal Learning Disorder Minnesota governor was sharing the difficult fertility treatment he and his wife, Gwen, went through to have their daughter, Hope.
Walz continued by expressing his love for his loved ones from the stage, stating, "Hope, Gus, and Gwen, you are my entire world. And I love you."
Gus Walz jumped up Acceptance Speech from his seat, with teardrops running down his cheeks, pointed his finger and said, âI love you, Dad.â
The heartwarming exchange between father and son, captured live by television cameras, quickly went viral and was mostly received positively on the internet and in the media.
Fox News Emotional Moment shared a video of the viral moment on its TikTok account, stating "Gus Walz steals the show during dad's acceptance speech." The comments were mostly positive.
âI hope to inspire my children so much that when they see me speak about the dreams and passion I have for my country, Social Dominance they are moved to tears like Gus Walz did,â posted Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, on X.
â@Tim_Walz has devoted his life to service and has clearly excelled in being an outstanding, supportive, and caring father every step of the way, â he wrote. âWe should all Cyberbullying be so lucky to know a love like that.â
U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who spoke before Walz on Wednesday night, commended the love between Walz and his children.

Critics dismiss Gus Walz as a 'puffy beta male'
But the show of affection triggered a wave of snarky and cruel comments from internet trolls, primarily supporters of MAGA, of former President Donald Trump, who faces Democratic presidential nominee Free Menstrual Products Kamala Harris and Walz in November.
Right-wing columnist and provocative commentator Ann Coulter ridiculed the teenagerâs tears. âNow that's weird, â she posted on X. The post has since been deleted.
Mike Crispi, a Trump supporter and podcaster from New Jersey, mocked Walzâs âcrybaby sonâ on X and wrote, âCongratulations Support For People With Disabilities on raising your kid to be a blubbering beta male. Congrats.â
Alec Lace, a Trump supporter who hosts a podcast about fatherhood, took his own shot at the teenager: âGet that kid a tampon already,â he wrote, in an apparent jab to a Minnesota state law that Tim Walz Walz signed as governor requiring schools to offer complimentary menstrual products to students.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel mentioned that Jay Weber, a conservative Milwaukee radio host, made a post on X criticizing the Walz family, now removed.
